Highlights for May

Literacy

Ms. Fung:

Over past few weeks for Predictable Chart Writing we have read From Head to Toe by Eric Carle, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?  by Bill Martin Jr., Little Cloud by Eric Carle, and The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.

After reading our stories a 2-3 times, we wrote our sentences:

"I am a/an ______. "

"I hear a/an ______."

"Little cloud changed into a/an ________."

""Hello," says the _______."

Students were able to choose their favourite animal to fill in the blanks. They each took a turn to select their choice on the Smart Board and then the next day we wrote our sentences on sentence strips, cut each word out, then pasted them back in order on our individual pages. Lastly, we coloured a picture of our animal. The individual pages were then put together to create a classroom book.

Numeracy

Ms. Higgins:

Over the past two weeks, we introduced math through story-telling. Through this approach, it allowed the student's flexibility to think playfully about mathematical concepts.

Through linking number work to the story ‘The Very Cold, Freezing, No-Number Day!’ and 'Chicka Chicka 123', the students were inspired to become familiar with their numbers.

The Very Cold, Freezing, No-Number Day

While reading 'The Very Cold, Freezing, No-Number Day', students engaged in the fun process of predictable chart writing, where students generated their own ideas and sentences.

Chicka Chicka 123

While reading 'Chicka Chicka 123', students interacted with number fluidity, subitizing, counting and colouring.
