Functional Academics

Ms. Fung:

In April, we began new group rotations for Literacy and Numeracy in the afternoon. The levelled groups are comprised of both EES classes. We have grouped them based on their skill level and social groupings. There are 3 groups that rotate through a literacy activity with me (Teacher Jasmine), a numeracy activity (Teacher Lauryn - Stacie's temporary teacher), and sensory centres. These rotations last 20 minutes each and we have 1 staff follow the group to provide support and assistance.

In Literacy, we have been working on Predictable Chart Writing. The schedule for Predictable Chart Writing works on a daily rotation. The first day we read a story. Each week I focus on one story - we have been reading Eric Carle books this year. The next day we read the story again, and then we create sentences using a sentence frame. The sentence frame is predictable and repetitive in nature. The students get to choose their own answer to fill in the sentence frame and then the next day we create the sentences on paper. Some students are at the level in which they can print, cut, and paste their sentences independently and some are working on 1 or 2 of these skills with support. After they glue their sentence frames on an individual page, we colour pictures to accompany their sentences. We then create a book made up of their individual pages.

Ms. Higgins:

This week we continued to explore the math concept of counting through game-based learning! From encouraging students to take turns counting candles out loud, and touching different objects by matching the number of candles to the corresponding balloons.

To keep sustained engagement, we also got off our feet and incorporated math into movement activities. We jumped up and down, ran laps, and did jumping jacks, all while counting sets and breaking a sweat!
